At Friend Kindergarten we have a Vision Map, with various approaches to put our vision into practice.
The fundamental concept of our vision is that children feel “the world is a fun place”, and can learn and understand that “happiness can be created through one’s thinking.
To grow and live, one must know the rules of society, maintain those rules, and decide how to behave. One must always think and behave in a way that makes one's own happiness, as well as others' happiness. A great part of one’s mind and one's fundamental way of thinking is formed by the age of 9.
Thus, the three years that correspond to the kindergarten period are very important. We must think of education from this perspective: What kind of mind can we grow that will lead to a happy life; not simply acquiring knowledge or learning the know-how of studying during this important period.
All our staff members are learning “Choice Theory”, which is very helpful in conveying this message. Conventionally, it has been mainly the teaching staff who were learning this theory. From now on, we want the families of children to learn the “Choice Theory” as well, so that the families can be happy, and follow the development of their children living in a happy environment.
About Friend Kindergarten
Friend Kindergarten has three kindergartens in Kushiro City, Hokkaido. All three kindergartens introduce Choice Theory developed by Dr. Glasser, and offer childcare with a unique educational program.
- 1.We provide education that acknowledges a child's individuality, existence, and character; we aim to expand individual potential.
- 2.We provide education that enriches a child's sensitivity, and enables that child to acquire social skills such as self-discipline.
As the saying goes, “What is learned in the cradle is carried to the grave.” What is acquired as a child will remain solid within that person for life. We take various approaches based on education that brightens each child’s individuality, as well as each child's life, so after graduating, that child can lead a better life.
◆Guidance Based On Choice Theory
There is no loud scolding, punishing, threatening, or bribing to get someone to do something. We create an educational environment in which problems are solved by finding the impediment and clearing it away, so that we can choose a better way or a better direction to move forward.

We believe that children learn a lot from play, and their minds and bodies are developed through play.
◆Let The Child Notice Things By Him/Herself
We place emphasis on thinking and noticing things by oneself.
We believe that our mission of kindergarten education is to develop each child’s “individuality” within the life of a group.
◆Develop Ability To Carry Things Through
We implement activities which help children grow as positive people, able to carry a matter through.
◆Appropriate Education At The Appropriate Time
We teach children based on the idea of “guiding the child at the most appropriate time, in the most appropriate environment, using the correct method”, by accurately deciphering each child’s development, both from the theoretical point of view, and the child's real situation. This is completely different from the idea of “early education”.

Approach Based On Choice Theory Psychology
【What Is Choice Theory?】
Choice Theory is the work of psychiatrist William Glasser, MD. It is a theory explaining human brain function. One learns concrete methods that help one to become independent, build positive relationships with others and live a better life. Management based on Choice Theory is called “Lead Management”, its’ counseling is called “Reality Therapy”, and both achieve significant results.
【Education Developing Independence】
We believe each person behaves according to his or her own unique ideal or desire. (We call it the “Quality World”.) We help children to think on their own, and to make better choices in their daily activities. We are always mindful to avoid using external control to pressure children to change. External control destroys relationships. It also hinders a child’s independence. We do not force the children to correct mistakes, but try to encourage their awakening as well as their independence, through “Listening”, ”Supporting”, “Respecting”, “Trusting”, “Accepting”, “Encouraging”, and “Negotiating Differences”. At Friend Kindergarten, we try to provide an environment where children feel they are “loved, recognized and respected”, based on Choice Theory. We make effort and devise ways to create an educational environment where children can choose a better behavior with their own will and their own ideas, to foster zest for living the future.
【About Fundamental Needs】
In Choice Theory, it is considered that all of us are born with the “Five Fundamental Needs” as below:
- Need of “Love and Belonging”:We want to be loved, be a member of a group of colleagues.
- Need of “Power (Approval)”: We want to be recognized, to achieve, and to help other people.
- Need of “Freedom”: We want to be autonomous; we don’t want to be forced to do things.
- Need of “Fun”: We want to do what we like; we want to have fun.
- Need of “Survival”: We want to eat, sleep, and rest.
It is important to satisfy the needs successfully. If these needs are satisfied successfully, we feel confident about ourselves. If not, we try to satisfy these needs even in unhealthy manners. In the approach based on Choice Theory psychology, how to satisfy one’s needs in healthy manners is learned. At Friend Kindergarten, we want to be a place where these needs are satisfied-not only for the children, but for the parents and staff members as well. When we see a child with problematic behavior, we do not necessary assume it merely as “Not good!” For example, we use the method what we call the “Seven Habits “-“Listening”, ”Supporting”, “Respecting”, “Trusting”, “Accepting”, “Encouraging”, and “Negotiating Differences”-to give our full attention to the child, keeping in mind of the child’s needs fulfillment.
Note: “Seven Habits” are shown as some concrete examples and is not everything. Glasser eliminates stereotyped methods.
【All Teaching Staff Learn Choice Theory】
Since 2007, all members of the teaching staff learn Choice Theory in their instruction course at Friend Kindergarten. Learning counseling technique helps in maintaining positive human relationships. The field of education is run by people with various positions and experiences. If the relationships within the organization are not good, it doesn’t matter how great the education philosophy that’s implemented; it will not work. At Friend Kindergarten, we provide education aimed to share and actualize the “Quality World” of our organization, while teaching staff members to pay attention to the “Quality World” of one other.
【Opportunity To Learn Choice Theory For The Family】
【We Want To Support Joyful Child-Rearing】
Since 2011, we have been conducting a workshop called the Happy Family, to share Choice Theory with the families of children, so that we can provide a catalyst for a joyful child-rearing. The course is full of clues to build happier child-rearing experiences, and better marriage relationships, to learn Choice Theory in a fun and easy way. It is also a place to talk about child-rearing, and to exchange information with other families. We hope that all families will have a chance to know the beauty of Choice Theory, and implement it at home.

【Towards The Establishment Of Friend Kindergarten-Style Quality School】
Dr. Glasser, the advocate of Choice Theory, believes that “most problems happening in the world today can be prevented if one can learn the method to establish a positive relationship with others before going into society”; he has initiated the establishment of “Schools Without Failure = The Quality School”. There are more than 200 schools in the United Sates that implement Choice Theory and each is producing remarkable results. At Friend Kindergarten, all staff members strive to create a unique and ideal kindergarten, using Choice Theory as the basis to for meeting the customs of the community, each family circumstance, and the Japanese educational environment: the Friend Kindergarten Style.
